Your weekend: Galesburg dances with stars and learns about safety tomorrow

The Galesburg Public Arts Commission hopes to raise funds on Saturday with Galesburg Dances with Our Stars going on it’s third year.

Couples with familiar faces have had six weeks of rehearsing their steps for the dance competition.

GPAC Member Heather Norman tells Galesburg’s Evening News on WGIL that it’s a fun night but the dancers put in a great deal of work to get ready.

“It’s traditional ballroom dances–waltz, foxtrot, tango,” Norman says.  “Scott Rasso teaches them to them over six weeks and he is excellent at making you look like you have been doing it for some length of time.”

By going to galesburgdances.com you can see the six couples dancing this year and donate to your favorite and whoever raises the most money will walk away the winner.

Tickets are $60 for the program and dinner taking place at Soangataha Country Club and all the proceeds will go toward the “Poet in the Park”event.

Also this Saturday is Safety Saturday at the Galesburg Lowe’s where various agents of safety from the Knox County Health Department to OSF will be giving instruction in safety.

Store Manager Rich Hudson says there will also be a Build-N-Grow for smaller children.

“Not really a safety activity, but something to keep them having some fun while they are there,” Hudson says. “They will do a D-I-Y type of a project.”

Free smoke detectors will be given to the first 200 people at Safety Saturday.
