Armory open house takes place June 1st

Galesburg officials are seeking input from the public regarding what will be done with the old armory building.

While City Council members continue to deliberate what will be done with the Broad Street facility, an open house allowing community members to provide feedback will be held June 1st starting at 5:30 p.m.

City Manager Todd Thompson says it will be an informal event.

“We’ll have some information to hand out, there will be staff, there will be representatives from the architecture firms,” Thompson says. “It will be an opportunity for people to ask questions and then also just walk around in the armory and see what it looks like.”

Thompson says surveys will be used to collect information. A community group called the Galesburg Organizing Project has already started the process of seeking information.

The GO Project surveyed 507 people throughout the city. In redeveloping the space, respondents said having wifi, an event space for 500 people and a teen lounge were top priorities.

Council is deciding whether or not to fund renovating the building as an event and recreation facility with money that would come from a $10 million bond issue through utility tax dollars.
