Galesburg Organizing Project releases survey results for old Armory

The Galesburg Organizing Project has announced the results of a survey conducted to determine the viability of the old National Guard Armory as a possible event and community center.

Eric Coats is the co-director of the the GO Project, a group of Galesurg residents along with students, faculty and staff from Knox and Carl Sandburg colleges. Coats says the results of the survey will be used to give the Galesburg City Council better guidance in how they move forward with the Armory.

When asked to rank the most important issues in the community, survey respondents said addressing lead pipes and redeveloping the Armory into a community center were the most significant.

In redeveloping the space, respondents said having wifi, an event space for 500 people and a teen lounge were top priorities.

A total of 507 people participated in the survey. The city will gauge community interest from its own survey as well. On Monday, City Manager Todd Thompson said an armory open house is scheduled for June 1st.
