ROE 33 schools to discuss impact of no FY17 funding tomorrow

School districts around the state are warning that doors will close in the near future without state funding.

Galesburg Superintendent Ralph Grimm says it’s possible District 205 won’t be able to make payroll as soon as January.

Facing the possibility that Gov. Bruce Rauner won’t sign an K-12 spending plan without a full budget in FY17, a meeting of the school districts of ROE 33 will take place tomorrow night at Knoxville High School.

The school boards of Galesburg, Abingdon-Avon, United, Knoxville, Mercer County, West Central, Monmouth-Roseville, ROWVA and Williamsfield will discuss the impact no state budget has on each of them.

Rauner is proposing fully funding General State Aid but Democrats plan to reform how schools are funded by taking money from wealthier districts and giving more to low income districts, which could complicated matters.

The Governor has called on legislators to send a “clean” education funding bill by the end of May but says he won’t sign legislation that pits communities against one another.
