Police out in force leading up to Memorial Day

Galesburg Police, Illinois State Police and the Illinois Department of Transportation are teaming up for two weeks to crack down on motorists not wearing seatbelts and other driving offenses.

According to a Galesburg Police Department news release, as a part of the Click It or Ticket campaign, officers will be out in force around the clock from May 16 to May 30 looking for impaired drivers and those not wearing seat belts. They warn that motorists caught driving impaired by alcohol and drugs will be arrested and those unbuckled will be ticketed.

Illinois law does require that drivers as well as front and back passengers are buckled up.

The release says provisional numbers show 13 fatalities occurred in Illinois during last year’s Memorial Day weekend, three of those involved alcohol.

ISP District 14 has also announced from May 13 to May 30, officers will conduct special patrols in Fulton, Hancock, Henderson, McDonough and Warren counties.

Troopers will be on the look out for speeding, failure to use occupant restraints and other driving offenses.
