New route for Memorial Day Parade

Galesburg’s Memorial Day Parade is making slight alterations to their parade route.

For years the parade has stepped off near the intersection of Chambers and Main Streets but that launch point has been moved to the 100 block of N. Seminary.

The parade will move south on Seminary before taking a right on to Main St where from there it will proceed as it has in the past, west towards Cherry Street where it will turn south and end at the Knox County Courthouse.

A City news release says the changes are due to”congestion” and “accessibility issues” at the old location as well traffic patterns that have changed since the Bickerdyke Bridge opened.

Following the parade at the Courthouse there will be a ceremonial reading of names of veterans who passed away from May 1 to April 30th of this year, followed by the laying of wreaths and a 21 gun salute with taps.

The Marshall of this year’s parade will be Bob Spears, Executive Director of Defender’s of Freedom shelter for homeless veterans.

Anyone wanting to participate in the parade will need to register by calling the Knox County VFW by May 27.
