Galesburg Alderman, Attorney Jeremy Karlin attends 20th Kentucky Derby

A crowd of 167,000 plus jammed into Churchill Downs this weekend for the 142nd running of the Kentucky Derby and if Galesburg residents took a close look at the infield they might have notice a familiar face.

This was the 20th year local attorney and City Council Member Jeremy Karlin attended the derby.

He says he attends with a group that has a “millionaire’s row attitude but an infield budget.”

Tickets can go for as low as $45 but same day tickets for general admission in the infield where Karlin was still only run about $60.

Still, Karlin tells Galesburg’s Morning News on WGIL the infield is plenty close to the thunder of the race track.

“You kind of feel the thumping in your chest of the hooves and then you hear it,” Karlin says. “And then like Indianapolis race cars they just go woosh, right by, and it’s this incredible thing,” Karlin says.

Karlin’s group got in line at 6:30 in the morning for gates that opened at 8 a.m.

Upon entering the ground, from mint juleps to seersucker suits like the one Karlin donned, the Race for the Roses and Churchill Downs of course are steeped in tradition.

“Kind of like Wrigley Field, it’s beautiful on television. It’s an extraordinary thing, you see the ivy and with Churchill Downs you see the twin spires but it’s aged,” Karlin says.

This year’s winning horse was 2-1 favorite Nyquist.
