UPDATE: One killed in crash on Route 41 near Abingdon

The driver of a Honda four door was killed as the result of a crash on Route 41 North of Abingdon this afternoon.

The name of the deceased is withheld pending family notification. The driver was the sole occupant in the Honda sedan.

In a news release, Illinois State Police say the Honda and a Ford pickup truck were both heading north on 41 near the 700 block of North Knox County Road.

The crash occurred around 2:45 p.m. when the Honda slowed to turn and the pickup failed to stop, striking the back of the Honda.

Traffic has been shutdown at the scene, and ISP say they expect 41 to fully reopen this evening around 7 p.m. For the time being, northbound traffic is being diverted onto County Road 26 and southbound traffic onto County Road 5.

The driver of the pickup and sole passenger refused medical attention. The driver has been charged with failure to reduce speed to avoid a crash and additional charges could be filed pending investigation.

Updated at 5:14 p.m. 5/4/16 to correct the number of fatalities involved in the wreck. The original story said two people were killed; the driver of the Honda sedan was the only reported death.
