Sentencing continued for Galesburg man charged with federal gun, drug crimes

A U.S. district judge continued the case of a Galesburg man scheduled for sentencing today on federal gun charges.

Judge Joe Billy McDade continued the sentencing of 44-year-old Freddie Collins Jr. to 10:30 a.m. June 29.

Collins pleaded guilty to using, carrying or possessing a firearm in relation to drug trafficking in February. In exchange, charges of possession of cocaine and heroin and possession of a firearm were to be dismissed.

McDade said he has not accepted the plea because advisory guidelines for sentencing related to the charges require further clarification.

Collins was arrested in a 2014 drug raid in Galesburg that led to local gun and drug charges. Those charges have since been dismissed in Knox County.

Collins could face up to life imprisonment for the federal charge. He is represented by Peoria attorney Derek Asbury.
