Lifeguard elimination on final read for Galesburg Council tonight

Lifeguards at Lake Storey Beach could be gone if Galesburg aldermen make the decision to eliminate the positions tonight.

Galesburg City Council will once again discuss the item proposed last month which would cut guards in lieu of “swim at your own risk” signage.

In an interview with WGIL last month, Director of Parks and Recreation Tony Oligney-Estill said once guards are open water certified they often don’t work the beach often enough to keep their skills sharp.

According to council documents, approval would save the city just over $39,000 and would allow the beach to remain open seven days per week during park hours.

Additionally, concessions and rentals would remain open on weekends and holidays between Memorial Day and Labor Day, as in past years. However, cuts would close the water slide for the 2017 season, moving it to the Lakeside Aquatic Center.

City administration has recommended approval.

Council will decide at tonight’s meeting in City Hall at 6:30 p.m.
