UPDATE: Traffic diverted for hours on I-74 following semi wreck

Traffic was slowed and diverted for hours today on Interstate 74 near Galesburg after a multi vehicle crash involving two semi-trailers and a passenger vehicle.

Galesburg police say a semi-truck traveling west at mile marker 48 veered into the median, lost control and flipped. A second semi then clipped the first and came to a stop in the westbound lane. A passenger vehicle collided with the second semi.

Debris, including oil, could be seen spilled. The semis were not believed to be carrying hazardous materials. Police first responded to the incident around 5:30 a.m. today. A single lane opened before 10 a.m.

Additionally, a tow truck attempting to remove damage struck another vehicle near the area. Police say no serious injuries were reported in either crash.

Dense fog in effect for much of the morning is believed to be a contributing factor in the turmoil.
