205 students shake it out at GHS

There was a whole lot of shakin’ going on this morning at Galesburg High School.

90 District 205 students packed into the GHS field house today to test out their etiquette techniques, including the art of the handshake, on more than 60 community leaders.

Students in grades 4-12 participated in the first day of the Great Galesburg Shake competition–the second year event created to help students hone manners and conversational skills in a professional way.

Each student was judged on his or her presentation and Galesburg Shake committee member Jodie McNally tells WGIL the field was narrowed down to 12 competitors.

Following a dinner and interview tomorrow night, only five will remain.

“And then we will reveal the location of the trip for rounds five and six–it’s a big secret–and it’s an amazing trip,” McNally says.

Even for those who don’t win, Senior Jacob Williams says the shake is a valuable learning experience.

“Earlier we were learning how to use utensils properly at restaurants and things like that,” Williams says. “I think it’s a great opportunity, especially for the younger kids.”

The competition winner will be announced next Wednesday at 6 p.m.
