205 tables vote on bowling team cut, moves forward with bond sale

Last night the District 205 School Board made only half of the cuts in district athletics they expected.

Board President Bob Lindstrom announced that something had “developed” that would cause the vote to eliminate the Galesburg High School girl’s bowling team to be tabled.

He says at this time it’s unknown if the program will be cut or not.

The middle school soccer program was approved to now be managed by the Knox County YMCA with GHS Athletic Director Jeff Flater saying the Y practically already runs the program and students will hardly notice a change.

Assistant Superintendent for Finance and Operations Jennifer Bloyd-Hamm told board members that there is a strong possibility that school will begin in August without state and federal funding if no Illinois budget is passed.

Because of concern, the strain of no payments would have Superintendent Ralph Grimm recommend the board move forward with the sale of $5.8 million in working cash fund bonds, preparing for that sale if financial calamity becomes reality.

“We conceivably could have a significant cash flow problem in February of 2017,” Grimm says. “I have to look at all the options to be able to make payroll to pay our bills.”

Grimm said these issues lie at the “feet of the Governor and legislative leaders” and they are holding those who rely on them “hostage.”

Director of Curriculum and Bright Future Principal Tammie Bolden whose dismissal was approved last month has requested a hearing that will take place in the next few weeks before the board in closed session.
