Spring Clean Up Days starts today

Starting today and running through Friday, Galesburg residents looking to clean out their garages, basements and backyards can get rid of most oversize items for no extra charge.

Galesburg Associate Planner Julie Main tells Galesburg’s Evening News on WGIL people can put items exceeding 50 pounds on the curb during regular refuse pick up days.

“Other times of the year, you have to put an oversize sticker on it,” she says. “But this is a great opportunity to get rid of your appliances that you might be holding to and especially furniture. We see a lot of furniture and you don’t have to worry about having it less than five feet in length.”

She adds that bagging items makes for less work for those picking trash up.

Some items are not eligible for Spring Clean Up Days, including liquid paint, car batteries, propane tanks, motor oil and tires. Additionally, electronics such as computer equipment, TVs, video game consoles, portable digital devices and other such items will not be picked up.

Other items require some disassembly

“Cumbersome items such as play sets and things like that, they have to be broken down,” Main says. “You just can’t put an assembled play set that no longer of use to you out on the curb.”

Clean Up Days is funded by the city refuse fee on residents’ water bills.

Main says more information is available at 309-345-3619.
