Driver charged on meth charges following car fire

A Galesburg woman is in custody as part of an ongoing investigation into a car fire that lead to the seizure of a small amount of meth.

Melissa A. Hackwith is held on $3,500 bond. The 35-year-old woman was arrested after police found two small plastic bottles containing meth near the scene of her burning vehicle.

According to police reports, officers responded last Thursday to an East South Street home where a vehicle that had been driven by Hackwith was on fire.

The blaze was quickly extinguished by fire crews.

Hackwith told police her car went up in flames when a cigarette belonging to a man in the passenger seat ignited gasoline that had been spilled inside the vehicle.

Police found a small amount of meth outside the home where the burning car was parked.

Hackwith was charged with possession of meth manufacturing materials and meth manufacturing waste. She is scheduled for an April 18 court appearance.
