Library trustees give permission for informational medical cannabis meetings to take place

Medical Cannabis Outreach is a non-profit that travels the state informing patients who qualify for medical cannabis in Illinois on how to apply for the 4-year pilot program.

The group has already conducted seminars at the Galesburg Public Library with another one planned at 1 p.m. this Saturday.

The consensus of the Library’s Board of Trustees at their meeting last night was that they approve of these seminars taking place.

Their conversation was in response to a complaint Library Director Harriet Zipfel received from a resident who Zipfel says voiced disapproval about these meetings taking place that openly advocate for violating federal laws despite medical use of cannabis in Illinois being legal.

Library Trustee Laurie Muelder tells WGIL that the library’s mission is ultimately to provide information to the Galesburg public.

“And these people are coming to provide information about a program which has been OK’d by the state of Illinois for people in this  community who might be interested and not know very much about it,” she says. “So it seems to me this fits perfectly well within the library’s mission.”

While marijuana for medical purposes is legal for 39 qualifying conditions in Illinois, including AIDS, cancer and glaucoma, it is by statute federally illegal.

In January Gov. Bruce Rauner rejected a proposal to include an expanded list of qualifying list of conditions to the program including PTSD and irritable bowel syndrome.
