April is Child Abuse Prevention Month

Mayors in Knox County and across the state are declaring this month Child Abuse Prevention Month.

Galesburg and Knoxville’s mayors made the proclamation on Monday. According to the proclamation document, Knox County saw 506 reports of child abuse in 2015 with 51 children taken into protective custody and 15 confirmed victims of child sexual abuse.

Ashley Germain is a Knoxville resident who works with the Blue Ribbon Task Force of Knox County, which sponsors child abuse awareness programs.

During Knoxville’s Council meeting, Germain asked aldermen for permission to place pinwheels on the strip median outside the Old Knox County Courthouse from April 18 to the 22.

“And we put those pinwheels out for a week to represent the cases that we have here in Knox County,” she says. “Those pinwheels move around. They’re actually currently at Carl Sandburg for the week, next week they’ll be in Abingdon, then they come, hopefully, here, and then they’ll be at the courthouse the following week.”

Aldermen unanimously approved allowing the pinwheels on Knoxville property.

Tonight, the Blue Ribbon Task Force is presenting a free family movie at the Orpheum Theatre. Big Hero 6 will be playing at 7 p.m.

A portion of money from those dining at Cherry Street Restaurant & Bar on April 19 will go to the Blue Ribbon Task Force and on April 28, the group will be hosting Hands Around the Courthouse in Galesburg where the community is invited to do just that — hold hands in a circle around the Knox County Courthouse.
