Kohl’s expects to open by end of 2016, construction under way

Construction on a Kohl’s department store in Galesburg has been long awaited but dirt is now moving at the future location on N. Seminary St.

City Manager Todd Thompson tells WGIL that Kohl’s expects to open their doors by the end of 2016 at a facility at the Seminary Square Shopping Center.

Galesburg officials worked to bring Kohl’s to town four years ago with heavy incentives but plans fell through.

When a Kohl’s deal sprang up again in December, Galesburg City Council approved offering the same package as before, about $1.5 million in tax incentives. The Economic Development Agreement passed city council in December with a 7-0 vote.

Thompson says with the resurrection of the department store’s arrival there are some tweaks to Kohl’s original plans to launch.

“What transpired was Kohl’s had originally owned that property and they transferred it to a developer who’s going to be responsible for constructing the facility,” Thompson says.

Four years ago Kohl’s planned to build a 55,000 sq. ft development on their own.

The facility that is being constructed now is a 36,325 sq. ft foot building
