Galesburg Council approves housing assistance increase, construction to start this month

A new housing development is expected to begin construction in the coming weeks.

In a quick Galesburg City Council meeting last night, aldermen voted 7-0 to allocate an additional $50,000 for public infrastructure work for the subdivision on Lincoln Park Drive.

The housing will include 26 lots of both single family homes and dual unit townhomes.

Developer Mark Kleine tells WGIL that weather pending, he’s ready to get to work.

“First thing will be the sewers and streets and our goal is to try and get the infrastructure in by mid-summer,” Kleine says. “Hopefully we’ll start doing some building towards August.”

Overall, Kleine says the project will cost approximately $1.4 million–the city footing $450,000 worth of the bill for things like streets and sewers. Galesburg’s share is being paid through the Urban Development Action Grant Program.

Kleine asked council for the additional funds last night, due to bids coming in “higher than expected.”

Council also unanimously approved a bid of $21,290 for Water Main equipment in the subdivision.

Additionally, a budget adjustment was approved, due to increased revenue over what was originally proposed for the FY15 budget.

City Manager Todd Thompson says administration is still tallying the exact amount, but the number may reach as high as $850,000–money which could be used to help fund police and fire pensions or for where council sees fit.
