Looking ahead at the new Silas Willard

The newly-built Silas Willard Elementary School feels all the more modern after walking the halls of the century old building next door.

Both old and new Silas schools were packed yesterday for an open house as past and current students mingled with teachers and curious community members.

Former Silas student Hilary Crowl, who is currently attending Carl Sandburg College, was touring the old building with her mom, Helen, and friend Teresa Sharp, both of whom work at Lombard Middle School.

Hilary told WGIL she was there to “say goodbye to the school one last time.”

“It was such an awesome building and place to come to school,” she said, “and it’s going to be sad to not see it anymore.”

The trio was checking out the old building — where classrooms had hardwood floors and fire places — before heading to the new facility.

District 205 Superintendent Ralph Grimm sat at the entrance of the new Silas. He described the building as “state of the art.”

“It’s bright, natural light. Roomy. Spacious. I think our staff is going to love teaching in this building,” he said. “I think our students are going to love being in this building. I’m so thankful to the taxpayers of District 205 for providing this opportunity.”

The old Silas is set for demolition in the summer. A formal ribbon cutting for the new building will be held in the fall once the playground is completed.
