Moffitt suggests including House Ag Committee in budget talks

State Rep. Don Moffitt wants to bring the Illinois House Agriculture Committee into budget talks to find a way out of the ongoing state stalemate.

Moffitt tells WGIL the ag committee could have a shot at finding a resolution.

“It’s bipartisan, it’s a good cross sample of the state,” Moffitt says. “It’s not just downstate. It is downstate plus suburban, plus even some Cook County, Chicago.”

He emphasized that the committee has a history of “working in a bipartisan manner.”

“The point is, nothing’s happening,” Moffitt says. “Let’s have something happen. So I like my idea of doing something better than the current plan of doing nothing.”

The Gilson Republican says he’d like to see the ag committee debate the budget, including non-ag related items, and offer their consideration.

The proposal to bring the committee on is a sign of Moffitt’s restlessness. He said repeatedly that the time for action has passed and that he was ready for an up or a down vote, just as long as action was being taken.

Moffitt adds that he will be attending tomorrow’s Legislators Luncheon at the Kensington Ballroom where he intends to talk about “where we’re at in the state in terms of the budget and the critical importance that we pass a budget and some of the problems it’s creating not having one.”

Republican Rep. Norine Hammond as well as Democratic Senator John Sullivan and Republican Senator Chuck Weaver will also be in attendance tomorrow.
