Knox County Housing Authority approves new commissioner pending County Board approval

The Knox County Housing Authority unanimously approved the recommendation for Moon Towers resident Paula Sanford to join the Board of Commissioners.

Following today’s meeting, Sanford told WGIL she worked for the Chicago Housing Authority from 1989 to 1993 and was previously a resident volunteer.

“With that being said, I’m very big on policy,” Sanford said. “So I’m always looking to make sure people are doing what they say they’re going to do.”

Should the Knox County Board approve Sanford’s appointment, she will begin as Resident Commissioner at the April 26 meeting. The appointment is for five years.

Also during today’s meeting, Commissioner Paul Stewart was reappointed to the board.

In other news, KCHA Director Derek Antoine says the Housing Authority will receive $608,000 in federal money for capital projects in the coming fiscal year.

“When I first started at the agency in 2007, we were getting just under a million in capital funds,” he says, “and that money has been cut drastically as Congress has seen fit. I’d say of the programs that have taken the biggest hits, capital funds are right up there.”

Antoine says capital funds will largely go toward updates to housing for residents with disabilities.
