Today, the Illinois Department of Transportation announced that I-74 westbound near Woodhull will be reduced to one lane for a few weeks in April to complete bridge repairs.

From Monday April 11 to Friday April 29 the stretch of the interstate over Pope Creek will be down to a single lane.

Pope Creek is approximately three miles south of Woodhull.

IDOT Communication Officer Brian Williamsen tells WGIL travelers can expect reasonable delays.

“Depending on times of the day there may be more delays than others but anytime you have a lane reduction there where you go from two lanes to one in a particular direction it’s expected that certainly traffic will be flowing in,” Williamsen says.

IDOT cautions drivers to slow down and use extreme caution while driving through work zones.

Williamsen says the repairs are general maintenance to the bridge that runs over Pope Creek, in fact he says it’s so small a lot of drivers may not realize they’re driving over a bridge.

He says generally though that as Spring blooms drivers should be keep their eyes peeled for road construction workers.

“Just reminding folks to be careful out there as the construction season is getting ramped up again,” Williamsen adds.
