Galesburg Easter: a day to praise, a day to graze

“He has risen, he has risen indeed.” Alongside the singing of hymns, those words echoed the walls of Central Congregational Church in downtown Galesburg this morning.

Christians around the world are celebrating Easter today–the day Jesus is believed to have risen from the dead. In Galesburg, the tradition to worship is no different.

At one of the city’s oldest churches resides one of the areas newest pastors–Rev. Dr. Sterrett Collins who tells WGIL that Easter is a proclamation.

“It’s a proclamation of Jesus triumphing even over death,” Collins says.

Collins adds that in terms of a crowd, the holiday is one of the best attended.

“My brother tells a joke, and it’s funny coming from my brother who doesn’t go to church very much,” Collins laughs. “There was someone who said a comment to the pastor as he was leaving saying, ‘you guys always have the same hymns! Every time I come it’s either Hark the Herald Angels Sing or Jesus Christ has Risen Today!”

Meanwhile, another well attended event was Easter brunch at the Packinghouse restaurant on Mulberry St. IMG_20160327_120052448

Manager Brandon Knapp says, “hands down, it’s one of the busiest holidays of the year. We prepare for a little over 400 guests to come through the building.”

Pot roast, glazed ham and homestyle chicken and noodles were just a few of the items hungry families dined on.
