Duncan leads state boxing committee

A local boxing leader and teacher has been appointed to lead a statewide committee of coaches.

President of the Galesburg Youth Athletic Club, Carlos Duncan was picked as Chairman of the committee earlier this month.  The Illinois Boxing Association was recently re-vamped after losing its accreditation a little over three years ago.

Duncan tells WGIL that under the role he’ll have a number of duties.

“I will select coaches to attend regionals, who will go to the nationals–what coaches are going to be working in different postions,” Duncan says. “Education is part of it. New techniques, all that type of information will come through me.”

Duncan says he wants to “restore Illinois” following IBA’s crumbling. He says the divide that split the association apart was a disconnect between different parts of the state.

“We had Chicago and then we had the rest of Illinois.” Duncan says. “The people from Chicago didn’t seem like they wanted to involve the rest of the state in anything so now it’s up to me, as far as the coaching, to get everybody on the same page.”

Duncan’s no stranger to the ring or leadership outside of it.

Aside from boxing himself, he’s been an Olympic and World Championship coach. Duncan’s appointment as Chairman will last four years.
