Weak Knox County revenues wounding finances

The Knox County Board’s Finance Committee left their meeting Wednesday night with concern over revenues being behind for the year, which could mean personnel cuts later this year.
Board Chair and Finance Committee member Brian Friedrich tells WGIL projected expenses are in check but revenues are down across the board.

“There’s nothing really to pinpoint just everything is low,” Friedrich says. “Fines and fees, and it’s really of no concern but we haven’t gotten our federal money from our federal prisoners coming in right.”

While Friedrich expects payments for housing federal inmates at the Knox County Jail to come in eventually that won’t mend several other areas of low revenue.

The committee has been holding an extra meeting per month since January to stay on top of budget concerns and find possible ways to trim the budget.

Those efforts have had some positive effects with expenses being below the 25 percent for 2016 they were expected to be at this point.

Friedrich says at the next budget meeting serious action will need to be taken to address the deficit.

“I’d rather do it now than wait until the last second and then have to do a lot bigger changes.”

Friedrich would not rule out personnel cuts especially in light of a study that’s being done on appropriate staffing levels for various county departments.

The results of that study will be released in July.
