Political yard signs in no rush to disappear

Now that Illinois primaries have wrapped you may be going a few months without seeing campaign signs in yards.
Or maybe not.

“The City of Galesburg used to have it where you could only have a certain size of signs and you could only put them out so many days before an election and had to have them down so many days after an election,” Knox County Clerk Scott Erickson says.

Erickson tells WGIL many municipalities around Illinois used to have similar rules until a few years ago at the state level those laws were wiped off the books.

Now Erickson says while it may not necessarily be a smart move, candidates can potentially leave their signs up all year round if they want.

“But it’s also a courtesy to the people that allow you to put signs up in their yard or in their businesses, because they don’t want to have that stuff sitting around for three, four, five months after an election,” Erickson says. IMG_20160317_131548254_HDR

Erickson says he’s like many candidates who will take signs down soon after election day for courtesy’s sake but also to recycle for future elections.

He says in the general election candidates from a certain party will usually help each other pick up signs but in the primaries it’s up to candidates themselves.
