States Attorney’s race too close to call, Swanson, Harlan winners

In a wild night of primary election coverage that included tornado warnings for Knox and many surrounding counties, just 67 unofficial votes have left the race for the Knox County State’s Attorney Democratic bid undecided.

Democrats John Pepmeyer and Jeremy Karlin remain nearly neck and neck, though Pepmeyer has slight lead with 2,993 total votes and Karlin with 2,926.

The kicker?–an additional amount of mail-in ballots and provisional ballots from both the City of Galesburg and Knox County remain.

Executive Director of the Galesburg Election Commission Lisa Watson told WGIL that for Galesburg, 36 Democratic mail-in ballots have not come back. Those ballots had to be postmarked by yesterday and must be counted by March 29th.

Knox County mail-in ballots and provisional numbers are unknown. Election officials indicate that an “official decision,” at least for the Galesburg election commission, could not come until April 1st.

Meanwhile, Alpha Veteran Dan Swanson claimed victory for the 74th District Republican nomination.

“I talked with State Representative Don Moffitt,” Swanson said. “He called to congratulate me and his words of wisdom–‘Dan, take tomorrow morning off, but tomorrow afternoon start working toward that November election.”

Also, Galesburg truck driver Patrick Harlan will battle Democrat Cheri Bustos for the 17th Congressional seat after getting the Republican nod last night.

“I think my campaign did a great job,” Harlan said. “We had a strong message about faith and family, and we are going to continue that message all the way through this.”

The General Election date is November 8th.
