Illinois primary elections are today

Today is election day for Illinois voters. We’ll have up-to-the-minute coverage of primary election results as they come in around 7 p.m. tonight, but in the meantime, the polls are open.

Executive Director of the Galesburg Election Office Lisa Watson yesterday told WGIL that about 1,340 early ballots had been cast locally, a number that grew throughout the afternoon.

“In the 2008 primary election, there were 733 individuals who voted early,” she says, “and so we’re, at this point, rapidly approaching double that number.”

She adds that presidential election years tend to draw greater crowds. Watson further says the Election Office encourages everyone who hasn’t already voted to get out there and do so.

“And if they have not registered yet, they can come to city hall, if they live in the city limits of Galesburg, and  vote at the same time,” she says.

Galesburg has about 17,621 registered voters. Knox County residents living outside of Galesburg add another 14,000 registered voters to the local total.

Polls are open until 7 p.m. today. As of yesterday, 95 vote-by-mail ballots had not been received. Final tallies for mail-in votes will not be available until April 1.

In addition to presidential results, we’ll bring you coverage — including live interviews with some candidates — for races in the 74th Legislative District, the 17th Congressional District, the US Senate, as well as State’s Attorney races in Knox and Henry counties and coroner races in Henry and Warren counties.
