UPDATE: Jeff Houston to be next GHS Principal pending board approval

The Principal of the Galesburg Area Vocational Center Jeff Houston will become the the new Galesburg High School Principal pending board approval on Monday.

If the District 205 School Board finalizes Houston’s hire he would replace Roy Van Meter who is resigning in July after four years at GHS.

Superintendent Ralph Grimm says Houston’s hire was paved by the board in their budget reduction process eliminating an administrator by combining the duties of GHS Principal with either those of GHS North Principal or GAVC Director.

He tells WGIL these circumstances made the choice between Houston and North Principal Jason Spring.

“We had conversations with both and I spoke to the board about both candidates,” Grimm says. “And it was generally the consensus of everyone that at this point in time Mr. Houston was the candidate we wanted to move forward with.”

Grimm emphasized that the circumstances don’t mean that the board and administration were upset at choosing between the two, calling them both “good candidates.”

Houston was hired as vocational director in 2011 but has worked for 205 for 16 years including a stint as head varsity boy’s basketball coach.

He’s also a resident of Knoxville a Monmouth College graduate.

If the at their March 14 meeting the board approves Houston his hire would be effective July 1, 2016.

Update at 3:25 p.m. 3/11/16 to add comment from District 205 Superintendent Ralph Grimm
