GPD prepares public in case of active shooter

Too frequently stories of mass shooters inflicting unspeakable carnage have come up in the news the past few years.

The massacres in San Bernadino, California, Roseburg, Oregon and Houston, Texas are just some of the incidents in the United States in the past year.

Sgt. Dan Hostens led a presentation and discussion of what to do in an active shooter event to try to prepare residents in case the worst happens.

Hostens says that once you’ve been alerted to the shooter, have locked down and informed the proper authorities–counter only if you have to.

“You want to avoid any kind of confrontation if you can, but we don’t want you to just be a target either,” Hostens says. “Trash cans, coffee pot, anything, you pick that stuff up throw it at somebody. It’s hard to shoot at people when you’ve got stuff coming at your head.”

He also stressed that in the event you’re somewhere where a shooter or similar event occur always call police to tell them you were there.

“Even if you think ‘I didn’t see anything, I didn’t hear anything’ we still want to hear from you,” Hostens adds. “We want to be able to paint a picture of the whole scene.”

Hostens invited any businesses that would like an officer to discuss recommended procedure for an active shooter at your business to call the Galesburg Police Department.
