Fire guts Abingdon home, two dogs dead

Fire crews extinguished an afternoon blaze that destroyed a two-story Abingdon home and killed two pets.

Abingdon Fire Chief Greg Schisler says firefighters arrived at about 3 p.m. at 606 N. Austin Ave. where a house was fully engulfed.

A man who identified himself as a resident of the home said he and another man had been staying there. No one was home when the fire broke out. The man says his two dogs perished in the blaze.

Schisler says the house was fully engulfed when crews arrived. The building, which is still standing with a collapsed roof, was deemed a total loss.

A cause of the fire has not been determined. Investigation was turned over to the state fire marshal.

A house north to the ruined building suffered minor exterior facade damage.

Abingdon police, Galesburg Hospitals’ Ambulance Service and Abingdon first responders assisted.
