Monmouth-Roseville implementing new curriculum to raise PARCC scores

Monmouth-Roseville saw low scores in last year’s first run of the Illinois Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers.

Superintendent Ed Fletcher tells WGIL District 238 is working to boost their scores.

“Our scores were not where we wanted them to be,” Fletcher says. “And we talked about the steps we need to take to rectify that.”

The board approved a purchase last month of a six year subscription of K through 8 math curriculum from GoMath for about $161,000.

In response to low scores, Fletcher says the district has been working to implement new K through 8 English curriculum as well.

School districts across the state have seen low numbers of students who met or exceeded on the PARCC last year but low scores often follow in the first year of implementing a new system.

Still District 238 had 18% of district students meeting or exceeding on the PARCC whereas state wide 33% of students met or exceeded.

At last night’s board meeting Fletcher also gave an update on district finances in light of the marathon state budget impasse.

He says the district receives about $600,000 a month in general state aid and if the budget impasse persists much longer borrowing might be in Monmouth-Roseville’s future.

“Our expenditures are anywhere between $1.1 and 1.3 million a month,” Fletcher says. “It doesn’t take a mathematician to figure out that’s not going to last us very long.”

PARCC testing will begin for Monmouth-Roseville in early April.
