Active shooter training scheduled for today and next week

With the help of local law enforcement, Carl Sandburg College and the Knox County Housing Authority are hosting active shooter events to make sure the community has some idea of what to do in the case of a shooting.

From 6 to 8 p.m. tonight at the Carl Sandburg College Building B and from 9 a.m. to noon March 17 at Moon Towers, educational active shooter sessions are being held.

Director of Corporate and Leisure College Stacey Rucker says Galesburg Police Sergeant Dan Hostens will be leading the forum tonight.

“The forum will help answer the question of what to do if you’re involved in an active shooter event,” she says. “In many cases, it can best be answered well before the situation arises.”

The Sandburg forum is free and open to the public.

At next week’s session, not-for-profit agencies are invited to the 3-hour active shooter response training session hosted by the Knox County Housing Authority.

Resource Development Manager Michelle Kim says it isn’t anything people want to think about, “but given the number of active shooter incidents that are happening, in incident like this can happen any time and anywhere.”

“So it’s really best to be prepared,” she says.

Those who wish to participate in the Knox County Housing Authority active shooter response training can call 309-342-8129; ext. 222.kcha
