World Day of Prayer in Cameron

World Day of Prayer is a day in which internationally women across the Christian faith gather to reflect on the needs of the world and pray.

In observance of this day Church Women United of Monmouth and Vicinity invited any and all to join hosted at Cameron Christian Church.

Every year women of a different country write this service and this year that honor was given to Cuba.

The Cuban women’s program entitled “Receive Children, Receive Me” was used in Cameron and presumably at gatherings across the globe.

CWU Member Gladys Olson tells WGIL for her this day has a special purpose.

“It’s to promote God and promote the church and that we’re all one big community,” Olson says.

World Day of Prayer was officially started by female missionaries in the 1920’s originally as World Day of Prayer for Missions.

Even though today’s event in Cameron was hosted by women and only women attended Olson insists that every year that anyone is welcome.

“Men could have come they,” Olson says. “They just chose not to.”

The tradition of women from different countries writing the service began in 1930 when Helen Kim of Korea did the honors.

World Day of Prayer is supported by mission offerings given by individuals during these services.

World Day of Prayer of USA is the organizing body of the day. Their mission statement is to promote” justice and equality for women through prayer, partnerships, service and celebration.
