Amtrak passenger busted on drug charges

Police arrested a Colorado woman on drug charges yesterday outside the Galesburg Amtrak depot.

Sonia R. Perez appeared today in Knox County Circuit Court via video on charges of possession of 30 to 500 grams of cannabis and possession of less than five grams of meth.

The 34-year-old Denver resident could face up to five years in prison for the meth charge and three years for pot.

Assistant State’s Attorney Sabrina Stroops said officers yesterday approached Perez and another Amtrak passenger, both of whom had “acted suspicious” at an earlier checkpoint. Police K-9 Ajax alerted to a bag carried by Perez.

In the bag, police found a container with a white residue confirmed to be meth in addition to burned foil wrappers.

In another bag, police found 408 grams of cannabis.

Judge Paul Mangieri set bond at $50,000 and appointed a public defender. Perez’s next court date is set from 11 a.m. Friday.
