Polar plunge numbers take a dip

Even on an unseasonably warm day the polar plunge took a dip from last year’s participant and income totals.

“It’s beautiful weather for a polar plunge, certainly the warmest day we’ve ever had for an event here in Galesburg,” said Jennifer Davis, Area 4 Manager of Special Olympics of Illinois.

The Galesburg area edition of the infamous jump into winter chilled waters set their local record last year with $56,000 and 360 participants.

A sunny Sunday afternoon in the high 50’s albeit windy wasn’t enough to break the record.

This year 230 participants showed up to plunge bringing in a total of around $44,000.

Area 4 Director of Special Olympics of Illinois Cathy Betar tells WGIL that making polar plunge a successful fundraiser is paramount to the organization.

“We’re non-profit, we don’t charge our athletes anything to participate,” Betar says. “It’s really significant that we get these funds so that we can continue to serve the 700 athletes that we do and hopefully grow our program and add more athletes.”

Organizers say if you were unable to attend Galesburg’s plunge you’re welcome to join the one in Macomb next Sunday, Mar. 6.

Same day entries are allowed as long as you have the $100 entry fee.

Also on Mar. 8 Special Olympics of Illinois is holding a fundraiser night at Alfano’s Pizzeria.
