City Council work session begins long budget process tonight

Galesburg aldermen will begin the long process of tackling the city’s budget for the next fiscal year this evening. Mayor John Pritchard says tonight’s council work session will be the first of many over the coming months.

Pritchard says the city is facing a “substantial deficit” of up to $3 million depending on how financial’s pan out.

Perhaps one of the biggest challenges facing council members revolves around the city’s lingering police and fire pension issue.

Due to uncertainty from the state, council rolled the item over from last year with hopes of having more clarity. During work session last year, aldermen discussed funding pensions at an increase of around $1.6 million.

Tonight’s session will involve a staffing analysis of non-public safety employees as well as a look at the general budget itself. Council meets inside the Erickson Conference room in City Hall at 6:30 p.m.
