Rash of wrecks reported due to high winds

Starting at 1:30 p.m. today, Illinois State Police have responded to multiple crashes in the areas of Knox, Henry, Mercer and Rock Island counties.

In an ISP news release, troopers say crashes related to high winds have been reported at mile markers 19, 26 and 27 along Interstate-74 as well as wrecks at mile marker 7 on I-80 and US 150 at Edwards River.

A witness said traffic at mile marker 19 on I-74 is backed up by about a mile and a half.

Crosswinds are pushing vehicles off roadways causing the wrecks. Police say higher standing vehicles, particularly semi-trailers and box-trucks, are most affected.

Troopers are encouraging drivers to postpone travel until winds die down. The National Weather Service says parts of the Midwest are experiencing wind gusts of 50 mph or more. A wind advisory is in effect until 6 p.m for the area.
