Public library seeks to divert landfill tonnage with demolition

The Galesburg Public Library’s Board of Trustees has given Library Director Harriet Zipfel the go-ahead to inquire about diverting landfill tonnage when they demolish recently purchased properties.

Adjacent to their future site, the library owns three properties which include two houses on Academy St. and what was Crazy 8’s bar.

FEH, the architectural firm the board hired to draft specifications for the library renders a service where they will salvage architectural elements to be sold.

At yesterday’s board meeting, Zipfel told WGIL that with disposing of the buildings waste the library has two options.

“One option is to demolish them and take it to the landfill, the other to do what you call deconstruction,” Zipfel says. “Deconstruction means that you look at the architectural elements within the building and you try to find buyers for that.”

That would mean the library could sell items like flooring, wainscoting and fixtures while saving money by diverting waste that otherwise would be sent to the landfill.

Zipfel has been in talks with Associate Planner for the City of Galesburg, Steve Gugliotta to see if the library could piggyback on to some demolition the city has planned.

Also on Monday M&O Insulation Company will perform asbestos abatement on the pair of Academy St. houses.

Last month the board approved M&O’s bid for the work at a price tag of $7,400.
