Chicago man in custody on theft charges

Galesburg police arrested a Chicago man yesterday morning following accusations that he stole a credit card, social security cards and other items from a Home Boulevard residence before making away with $800 in ATM withdrawals.

Police reports show 35-year-old Dale W. Gills was staying in the home of the victim for a short time leading up to the theft. In the early morning hours yesterday, the victim said her social security card and that of her two children were missing as well as a state ID card, a credit card, two cell phones, a tablet and headphones.

The card was used at a local ATM to make two $400 withdrawals. Security footage showed a man wearing a black ski mask make the withdrawals — the mask was later seized as evidence.

Officers found Gill, who had been fingered as the suspect, at the Galesburg Amtrak depot.

The stolen items were recovered, however, the SIM cards were removed from the two phones. Police charged Gills with theft between $500 and $10,000 and unlawful use of a credit card.

He remains in the Knox County jail on $50,000 bond awaiting a court appearance at 11 a.m. Friday.
