Police urge citizens to mind frigid weather

With windchills dipping into the negative teens, the Galesburg Police Department cautions people against going out unprepared.

The Associated Press reports cold exposure likely resulted in the deaths of three elderly women in the Chicago area. A 90 year old a 70 year old were found outside their respective residences having succumbed to hypothermia.

A 68-year-old woman was found Monday dead in her home where the heat had stopped worked.

Galesburg Lt. Russ Idle tells WGIL people should be mindful of those who may need extra care in winter months.

“As citizens we should all be checking on each other,” Idle says. “If people know that they have elderly neighbors or people living by themselves, or people who are sick or ill–it’s always best to keep an eye on each other and take care of each other the best we can.”

Idle adds that people should heed weather warnings when they’re issued.

“One of the most important things is when a cold weather advisory is sent out and temperatures go down people need to take that seriously. It can be very dangerous. People need to not be exposed to the cold weather. If you’re out driving you need to take extra precautions like taking warm blankets, extra coats, things of that nature.”

The lieutenant further says people out in the elements should take “common sense precautions,” like bundling up.
